30 to 45 minutes ago of smoke down in the dupont circle metro station. folks were told to leave right away. in fact, i have one lady here. her name is debra. you were actually down there. you were across the street, right? and you noticed the smoke and saw the confusion. >> i was in the metro. i was getting back from who work and getting off the north exit. i noticed smoke as soon as i got off the metro or smelled it rather and then i saw a ton of smoke billowing out of the escalators. >> what were they saying, trying to get out out. >> saying don't come out here, go to the other side so we went to the south exit. >> reporter: explain how busy was it and how much smoke. >> i don't know how to say how much smoke. it was definitely uncomfortable. i was able to breathe fine but not comfortable. you can see it billowing from escalators. >> so it was a haze. was it coming from the steps of the escalator. >> it looks like it was coming from the steps. >> reporter: did you notice lot of firefighters, were they initially on the scene. >> yeah. i did see them at the north side. they were

during rush hour. kristin fisher is live from the dupont circle station with more. good morning. >> good morning, andrea. metro police are saying the chaos is caused by a complete communication breakdown. apparently there are radio dead spots inside of this dupont circle station. so when these escalators broke down last week and smoke started to billow out, metro police had to rely on cell phones and we know how well those can work when you are deep underground. what's the solution? the board of directors announced they will be supplying metro stations with bull horns to aid in crowd management in crisis situations with. metro's board addressed the case later repairs here at the dupont station. they say the work will continue another week but should be complete by the end of july. people have been hiking up and down these 18 foot long escalators ever since monday of last week and in the middle of the summer. metro is apologizing for the inconvenience and the extra exercise but say they have a good excuse as to why the repairs have taken longer than usual. >> a lot of the units are very o

exiting the dupont station are walking up broken escalators again this morning. three have been out of service and are expected to stay that way. kristin joins us live. >> they are feeling the burn this morning because almost everybody exiting the dupont station has to walk up 150 flights of stairs, one of the steepest escalators in the world. metro said it will likely not be until this week that all of them are mixed. the problem started during monday's evening rush hour as smoke started to billow out of one of the escalators. it caused panic for those stuck there and couldn't see the smoke. metro mechanics are working to retear two escalators and two escalators at the 19th street exit. fixing broken motor drives and metro said some of these escalators will likely stay out of service until late last week. >> we can put a man on the moon, but we can't keep these continuings working. >> they want more money, but they won't spend what we need. >> reporter: many riders are taking particular offense to the latest breakdowns, metro rolled out the biggest hike in the agency history two weeks

. kristin fisher joins us from dupont circle where metro riders are feeling frustrated. are we seeing any improvement? >> we are seeing some improvement. two of the up escalators working metro said it will likely be later this week before all of the escalators at this station are fixed. this problem started during the monday evening rush hour when spoke was spotted billowing out of one of the escalators and caused near panic for the riders stuck and could not see through the smoke. metro closed down all of the escalators forcing passengers to walk out or ride to another station. metro mechanics are working to repair two at the q street exit and two at the 19th street exit. metro said at least some of these escalators will stay out of service until later this week. >> we can put a man on the moon, but we can't keep these working every day. >> they want more money, but they won't give the service we really need. >> reporter: this is not the first time metro has had problems with their escalators. this is a chronic problem. metro rolled out the biggest rate hike in the agency's history t

escalators at the dupont circle metro station are shut down for repairs. >> this stems from a chaotic incident that sent passengers freeing there harm's way. sarah simmons joins us from the dupont circle stop with the detailsism the smoke may have cleared but there are still a lot of headaches here at the dupont metro stop this morning. crews have been working throughout the evening hours on the escalators but still two out of the three of the escalators at both the forth and south side are not working right now. this started just before 6:00 last night. firefighters were called to dupont circle for smoke coming from the escalators. people were trying to escape knowing that the smoke was coming from the escalator on the north side. in the meantime red line passengers were still filling the station, trains were still stopping there. and while some describe it as complete chaos, others say seeing the escalators out of service today is like any other day of the week. >> it was different. you didn't know the police -- the smell of smoke and the smell and it was just completely confusing.
